Why Bleach And Silk Don't Mix

You have likely seen warnings about not using bleach when washing silks. But why? I wanted to see what would really happen when you put bleach and silk together. So, I put bleach into a jar and then dropped in a 100% silk scrap. In 21 minutes, that fabric was reduced to floaters. Click on any thumbnail to see the larger image.
